Look ma, first post!

Staring at a blank textarea, trying to write your first post in a language you were not born to speak is always hard, but I have to start somewhere, so accept my apologies for the most uninteresting beginning a blog has ever had. I promise it will become better as you keep reading my posts :) .

A Tempest of Thoughts is my first English language blog. It’s a couple of years since I first started fiddling with the idea of a technology oriented blog, but I could never find the will or a compelling reason to fire it up, until now.

It’s been a hard decision to make, but last year I left my old job to try and earn a living doing what I like, writing code and studying technology, and I can’t say it wasn’t worth the risk.

In this year I’ve had the chance to work with a lot of interesting technologies, like the Ruby language and its really famous framework, Ruby on Rails. While working with the Italian Ruby community on The Ruby Mine I met a lot of cool people. Some of them have become true friends, (tm) and we have partnered under the nimboo banner to show ourselves that people sharing beliefs and ideals can work together to build better software.

During this last year we’ve also seen the rise to fame of Ajax and lots of social web applications, and finally European startups are starting to gain momentum.

The speed at which new applications and concepts are being developed is amazing. Never since the beginning of the world wide web people have been working on cool concepts, with cool technologies, and sharing the results.

The biggest players have left the doors open and applications like Google Maps or YouTube allow you to integrate their features in your applications. We have started taking APIs for granted, but if we look back 3-4 years we see a cloud of overlapping and closed applications.

As most of you I’m pretty excited with this scenario, and I can’t wait to talk about these things.
