Old Jokes

Two old jokes I didn’t know that made me Roll On the Floor Laughing.
Emacs is a great operating system, but it lacks a good text editor.
Firefox is a great operating system. I just wish it had a decent web browser.
Before emacs and mozilla people come assailing me please remember that I was told these jokes by my SamePlace creator and emacs-lover friend: Massimiliano Mirra
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

For a lot of time I’ve been looking for a recording of Steve Jobs’ speech to Stanford graduates, but I’ve never been able to find it. Thanks to a fellow italian blogger I’ve been finally able to watch and listen to a speech so powerful that I have tears running down my cheeks every time I read or listen to it. Unfortunately my blog layout doesn’t allow for direct embedding of YouTube Videos, but please, if you only follow one link today, follow this one: Steve Jobs to Stanford graduates.
Tagged is a Trojan
Posted by Giovanni Intini | Filed under Random Stuff
In these long years of work at a computer I was never conned into launching/accepting/opening a trojan, but tagged got me. Let me spell it cleanly: Tagged is a Trojan.
I’ll change my gmail password right after I submit this post to be sure. I don’t even know how I could give access to so much personal data to a web application I didn’t trust.
For Italian readers: Tagged รจ pessimo.
Platform switching

As you probably know I recently bought a Macbook Pro to replace my trusty Powerbook G4, friend of many adventures in the lands of programming, and you will be happy to discover I’m still writing posts on the old friend.
The reason is simple, I still couldn’t find the time to move all of my data from the PB to the MBP, and I’m not sure I will be able to do it as soon as I would like to.
Nowaday people stock so many data on their hard drives, personal and work related, that migrating is a PITA. I could use the mac migration assistant, but I would like to reorganize everything (especially my fink layout). I also fear that many of my applications won’t work well on the new intel platform.
I’ll probably try the migration assistant and see if it allows partial migrations (maybe just music, that would be ok).
I’m open to any suggestion so feel free to comment, and cross your fingers for me
Look ma, first post!

Staring at a blank textarea, trying to write your first post in a language you were not born to speak is always hard, but I have to start somewhere, so accept my apologies for the most uninteresting beginning a blog has ever had. I promise it will become better as you keep reading my posts
.
A Tempest of Thoughts is my first English language blog. It’s a couple of years since I first started fiddling with the idea of a technology oriented blog, but I could never find the will or a compelling reason to fire it up, until now.
It’s been a hard decision to make, but last year I left my old job to try and earn a living doing what I like, writing code and studying technology, and I can’t say it wasn’t worth the risk.
In this year I’ve had the chance to work with a lot of interesting technologies, like the Ruby language and its really famous framework, Ruby on Rails. While working with the Italian Ruby community on The Ruby Mine I met a lot of cool people. Some of them have become true friends, (tm) and we have partnered under the nimboo banner to show ourselves that people sharing beliefs and ideals can work together to build better software.
During this last year we’ve also seen the rise to fame of Ajax and lots of social web applications, and finally European startups are starting to gain momentum.
The speed at which new applications and concepts are being developed is amazing. Never since the beginning of the world wide web people have been working on cool concepts, with cool technologies, and sharing the results.
The biggest players have left the doors open and applications like Google Maps or YouTube allow you to integrate their features in your applications. We have started taking APIs for granted, but if we look back 3-4 years we see a cloud of overlapping and closed applications.
As most of you I’m pretty excited with this scenario, and I can’t wait to talk about these things.
Welcome to my Tempest of Thoughts!
